Skin
Excessive itching

Good morning. I just have a quick question. I have some hydroxyzine that LJ was prescribed last year when her itching just started. It’s not expired. Can I try giving her one of those to see if it helps? It’s 10mg. The original directions was 10 mg in morning and 5 mg 12 hours later. She was also given Betagen topical spray, but that stuff is scary. I heard vinegar and water is good to spray on skin. Is that true?

Good morning! I understand your concern about helping LJ feel more comfortable. Hydroxyzine, which is an antihistamine, can indeed help with itching. Since it was previously prescribed to her, it should be safe to use again as long as the medication hasn't expired. You can follow the original dosing instructions of 10 mg in the morning and 5 mg 12 hours later.

Regarding the Betagen topical spray, it contains both an antibiotic and a corticosteroid, making it effective for reducing inflammation and preventing infection. If you have any concerns about using it, you might want to start by applying it to a small area to see how LJ reacts.

As for using vinegar and water, it is generally not recommended for cats, as vinegar can be irritating to their skin and might cause more discomfort. Instead, consider using a gentle, hypoallergenic pet shampoo or wipes specifically designed for cats to help soothe her skin.

Keep a close eye on LJ's condition. If the itching persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult with your veterinarian to rule out any underlying issues such as allergies, parasites, or infections.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
