Dog got neutered yesterday and doctor didn’t provide pain meds for home. He’s sleeping and comfortable for the most part but when he is walking around he’s whining and uncomfortable. I have a e-cone on him and all he’s doing is going in circles trying to get to his behind part. What can I do to help with his pain?

I'm glad to hear that your dog is mostly comfortable following his neutering procedure. It's quite normal for dogs to feel a bit uneasy and confused after surgery, especially with the e-cone on. Here are some ways you can help him feel more at ease:
Firstly, ensure he has a quiet and comfortable space to rest. Providing soft bedding can significantly enhance his comfort. Regarding the e-cone, make sure it fits properly—snug enough to stay on but not too tight. If the cone causes him anxiety, try to keep him calm with gentle petting or soothing words.
Offering toys or treats can be a great way to distract him from any discomfort. Puzzle toys or chew toys are particularly effective in keeping him occupied. It's also important to monitor the incision site closely. Watch for any signs of redness, swelling, or discharge, as these could indicate an infection, and you should contact your vet if you notice any of these symptoms.
Additionally, try to limit his activity to prevent any strain on the incision site. Short, supervised potty breaks are fine, but it's best to avoid running or jumping. Applying a warm compress gently around the area (but not directly on the incision) can sometimes help soothe discomfort.
If you notice his discomfort increasing or if he shows signs of severe pain, such as constant whining or reluctance to move, it would be wise to contact your vet for advice. They might be able to prescribe pain medication if necessary.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions. Thank you for taking such good care of your dog!
