The presence of fleas or ticks can cause intense itching and subsequent redness and scabbing due to the dog's allergic reaction to the parasite's saliva. This condition is known as flea allergy dermatitis. The bad smell and sticky skin could indicate a secondary bacterial or yeast infection, which often accompanies skin damaged by scratching and inflammation.
Hair loss and flakey skin or dandruff could be a sign of an underlying allergy, such as atopic dermatitis, or a result of the constant scratching and trauma to the skin. The fact that the symptoms have been present for two days and are no longer ongoing may suggest a transient irritant or allergen was the cause, but it's also possible that the issue is chronic and has temporarily subsided.
