Itching

Kahn's ear started bothering him about a month ago after topical tick medicine was applied. I kept it clean and it cleared up some. After applying this months flea topical, Kahn's itching became worse, on skin and his ears. It has been almost a week now he has had stinky runny yellow wax build up, head tilting, itching, and "groaning" while rubbing it. I'm pretty sure he has an allergen to fleas, not sure if that has anything to do with his ear or not. He is up to date on his vaccinations

It sounds like Kahn is dealing with a significant ear infection, which can be quite uncomfortable for him. The symptoms you're describing—such as a bad smell, redness, head shaking, excessive discharge, itching, and groaning while rubbing his ears—are all classic signs of an ear infection. This could potentially be a reaction to the topical flea treatment, especially if the symptoms started around the same time as the application.

Here are a few steps you can take at home to help Kahn:

First, gently clean Kahn's ears with a vet-approved ear cleaner. It's important to avoid using cotton swabs, as they can push debris further into the ear canal. Instead, opt for cotton balls or gauze.

Since you suspect an allergy to fleas, it would be wise to discuss alternative flea treatments with your veterinarian. There are oral medications available that might be less irritating for Kahn.

Additionally, ensure Kahn's ears stay dry, especially after cleaning or bathing, as moisture can exacerbate ear infections.

Try to prevent Kahn from scratching his ears too much, as this can worsen the infection. You might need to use an Elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent him from causing more damage.

Given the severity of his symptoms and the fact that they have been ongoing for a week, it's crucial to have him seen by a veterinarian. They can properly diagnose the infection and prescribe the necessary medications, such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs, to help clear it up.
