He has been throwing up small amounts. Most of the times the throwing up has been clear liquid or it might have some foam in it but just one time, today, it was grainy. He will throw up then rest for a little bit then play and will act perfectly fine so that’s why I haven’t taken him to see a vet yet. The vomiting is not constant and again is only once or twice a day and small amounts

It sounds like your cat's vomiting could be related to a few common issues such as hairballs, dietary indiscretions, or mild gastrointestinal irritation. The fact that your cat remains active and playful is a positive sign, suggesting that the problem might not be severe at this time. However, it's still important to keep a close eye on the situation.
Here are some steps you can take at home:
Firstly, consider adjusting your cat's diet by offering smaller, more frequent meals. This can help if the vomiting is due to eating too quickly or consuming too much at once.
Next, ensure that your cat is staying well-hydrated. Dehydration can worsen vomiting, so make sure fresh water is always available.
If you suspect hairballs might be the culprit, you could try a hairball remedy or switch to a diet designed to reduce hairballs, as even American Shorthairs can experience hairball issues.
It's also crucial to monitor your cat for any changes in behavior, appetite, or the frequency and nature of the vomiting. Should the vomiting become more frequent, contain blood, or if your cat appears lethargic or uncomfortable, it would be wise to consult a veterinarian.
Lastly, consider any recent changes in your cat's environment or diet that might coincide with the onset of vomiting. Stress or new foods can sometimes trigger these symptoms.
Since the vomiting has been occurring for five days, albeit not constantly, it's prudent to continue monitoring your cat closely. If the symptoms persist or worsen, a visit to the veterinarian would be advisable to rule out any underlying issues.
