she’s been more protective towards the kittens, anytime we pick one up she’ll meow and rush to them. she’ll leave the babies and lay down somewhere but eventually meow, get back up and come back to them, repeating the cycle. its been like this ever since one of the babies passed.

It sounds like your cat is naturally exhibiting maternal instincts, especially after the unfortunate loss of one of her kittens. This behavior is quite common among mother cats who are protective and attentive to their remaining kittens. Her vocalizing and restlessness are likely her ways of ensuring their safety and well-being.

To support her during this time, there are a few things you can do:

Firstly, it's important to provide her with a safe and quiet space where she can feel secure with her kittens. This can help reduce her anxiety and make her feel more at ease. Additionally, try to minimize disturbances by limiting how often you handle the kittens unless it's necessary. This can help reduce her stress and lessen her need to constantly check on them.

Spending some time with her, offering gentle petting and reassurance, can also help her feel more relaxed and supported. Keep an eye on her behavior for any signs of distress or changes in her health. If she seems overly stressed or if her behavior changes significantly, it might be a good idea to consult a veterinarian for further advice.

Lastly, maintaining a consistent routine can help her feel more secure. Regular feeding times and a stable environment can be comforting for her.

It's important to give her time to adjust to the changes and continue to monitor her behavior. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
