Lucy gave birth to a litter of seven puppies a little over six weeks ago. She has been a very good mother, but after four weeks, she had gotten very skinny despite eating normally or more than normally and stopped wanting to feed the puppies. She became very, very focused on food and always seemed hungry no matter what she ate. She didn’t seem to gain weight about a week ago. I noticed a dark red discharge from her vagina then over the past couple of days, she seemed even hungrier and skinnier, and now she is eating but vomiting up, excessive amount of whatever she ate almost immediately.

It sounds like Lucy is experiencing some symptoms that are quite concerning and require immediate attention. The combination of weight loss despite an increased appetite, dark red vaginal discharge, and vomiting could point to several potential issues, such as a uterine infection known as pyometra, a metabolic disorder, or even a gastrointestinal problem.

Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that can occur in unspayed female dogs, particularly after they have given birth. The dark red discharge, along with changes in appetite and weight, could be indicative of this condition. Additionally, vomiting and excessive hunger might be related to metabolic imbalances or gastrointestinal issues.

Given the severity and combination of these symptoms, it is crucial to have Lucy evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. They will be able to perform the necessary diagnostic tests, such as blood work and imaging, to determine the exact cause and provide the appropriate treatment.

In the meantime, try to keep Lucy comfortable and ensure she has access to fresh water. It's best to avoid giving her any new foods or treats that could potentially upset her stomach further. Please seek veterinary care immediately to address these symptoms and ensure Lucy receives the care she needs.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
