We have another dog that is 3 months older than baby we got her with looked like a skin allergy. Now this dog has had puppies and now my baby has it and all of the puppies
It sounds like your young American Pit Bull Terrier is experiencing some concerning skin issues, such as scabbing, hair loss, and itching, particularly on her head. Given that another dog in your household had similar symptoms and now the puppies are affected, it’s possible that this could be a contagious condition.
There are several common causes for these symptoms:
1. **Parasites:** Fleas, mites (such as mange), or lice can cause severe itching, hair loss, and scabbing. Even though you are using topical treatments, some parasites can be resistant or may require a different type of treatment.
2. **Fungal Infections:** Ringworm is a common fungal infection that can spread between animals and cause hair loss and scabbing.
3. **Bacterial Infections:** Secondary bacterial infections can develop from scratching and cause similar symptoms.
4. **Allergies:** Environmental or food allergies can also cause skin issues, though the contagious nature suggests an infectious cause.
- **Bathing:** Use a gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo to bathe your dog. This can help soothe the skin and remove potential allergens or irritants.
- **Topical Treatments:** Continue with the flea and tick prevention, but ensure it’s applied correctly and consistently.
However, given that multiple dogs are affected and the symptoms are ongoing, it’s crucial to get a definitive diagnosis. A veterinarian can perform skin scrapings, fungal cultures, or other tests to identify the exact cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
