It sounds like your Shih Tzu's third eyelid is intermittently protruding, which can indeed be concerning. This condition, often referred to as "cherry eye," is common in certain breeds. The third eyelid, or nictitating membrane, can become more visible due to inflammation or other underlying issues.
Since the issue seems to come and go, it might be a temporary irritation or mild inflammation. Here are a few steps you can take at home to help manage the situation:
Firstly, gently clean the area around her eye with a damp, soft cloth. It's important to avoid using any harsh chemicals or saltwater, as these can further irritate the eye.
Next, keep an eye out for additional symptoms such as excessive tearing, redness, or discharge. If you notice any of these, it could indicate an infection or a more serious issue.
If she is rubbing her eye frequently, consider using an E-collar to prevent her from causing further irritation or injury.
Additionally, ensure she is in a comfortable environment where she isn't exposed to irritants like dust or strong winds.
If the third eyelid continues to protrude or if you notice any worsening symptoms, it would be best to have her examined by a veterinarian. Persistent issues with the third eyelid can sometimes require medical or surgical intervention to prevent long-term problems.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
