I think she has mbd. What do I do? I got her a few weeks ago from another family that resuced her and didn't have time for her. I think she already had it.
Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) is a common issue in reptiles, often resulting from an improper diet and inadequate UVB lighting. It's great that you're taking steps to address this early.
First, ensure she has access to a high-quality UVB light. This is crucial for calcium absorption. The light should cover a significant portion of her enclosure and be replaced every 6-12 months, as UVB output diminishes over time.
Next, provide a balanced diet rich in calcium. Depending on her species, this might include leafy greens, insects, or specially formulated reptile food. It's also beneficial to dust her food with a calcium supplement that does not contain phosphorus.
Hydration is another key factor. Make sure she has access to fresh water and maintain proper humidity levels in her enclosure, as dehydration can exacerbate MBD.
Additionally, ensure her enclosure has a proper temperature gradient, with a basking spot that allows her to thermoregulate effectively.
Monitor her closely for any signs of improvement or worsening. If you notice severe symptoms such as lethargy, fractures, or difficulty moving, it’s important to seek veterinary care immediately.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
