Chiggers, also known as harvest mites, are tiny parasites that can cause intense itching, redness, and scabbing on your dog's skin, particularly in areas like the underbelly and chest where the fur is thinner. These symptoms are a result of the chigger larvae feeding on the skin's cells, not blood, which leads to irritation.

To address the chigger infestation on your dog, you'll want to start by giving her a thorough bath with a gentle, dog-appropriate shampoo. This can help remove any chiggers that are still on her skin.

For the affected skin areas, a soothing topical cream or ointment that contains hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation and itching. It's essential to prevent your dog from scratching the irritated areas to avoid secondary infections. Using an Elizabethan collar (cone) can help with this.

Keep the environment around your dog clean and free from tall grasses and weeds where chiggers thrive. Regularly wash your dog's bedding and vacuum areas where she spends time to remove any lingering pests.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, it's crucial to seek immediate veterinary care: a rapid increase in redness or swelling, the appearance of pus or discharge, a foul odor from the affected skin, lethargy, or a decrease in appetite. These could be signs of a secondary bacterial infection or a more serious underlying condition.
