We allready have one cat, and today we brought indigo, we tried to intruduce them to eacother but they wont stop hissing and trying to start a fight, indigo is boy and a new cat, livi is girl and first cat
Introducing a new cat to your home, especially when you already have a resident cat, can indeed be a bit challenging. Cats are naturally territorial, so it's quite common for them to hiss and show some initial aggression. However, there are several steps you can take to ease this transition and help them get along.
First, it's important to keep Indigo and Livi in separate rooms initially. This allows them to get used to each other's scent without direct confrontation. You can facilitate this by swapping their bedding or using a cloth to rub one cat and then the other, helping them become familiar with each other's scent.
After a few days, you can allow them to see each other through a barrier, such as a baby gate or a slightly open door. This helps them get used to each other's presence without the risk of a fight.
To create positive associations, feed them on opposite sides of the door so they begin to associate the presence of the other cat with something positive. Gradually move the bowls closer to the door over time.
Once they seem more comfortable, you can allow them to meet in a controlled environment. Keep these meetings short and positive, using toys or treats to distract and reward them for calm behavior.
It's also crucial to provide plenty of resources, such as multiple food and water bowls, litter boxes, and resting places. This reduces competition and territorial behavior.
Monitor their behavior closely. Some hissing and swatting is normal, but if they start to fight aggressively, separate them and try again later.
Patience is key in this process. It can take days, weeks, or even months for cats to fully accept each other. If the aggression persists or escalates, consulting with a professional animal behaviorist might be helpful.
