Getting ready to give her a dose of canine Advantix to flea tick mosquito repellent. And she’s never had it before and I was wondering if I cause I got her children’s Benadryl just in case he has a allergic reaction to it and I was just wondering if I should just precaution and give her a dose before I give it to her or wait and see if she has an allergic reaction to it because I was reading the side effects and the pretty bad and I’m scared to give it to her, but she also has a problem with Flea so I really don’t know what to do. I’m scared it’s gonna hurt my dog but then again she’s so covered and fleas that she needs something in the Flea shampoo is not working anymore.

It's completely understandable to be cautious when introducing a new medication to your dog, especially considering her history with distemper. While Canine Advantix is generally safe for most dogs, there is always a small risk of allergic reactions. Here are a few steps you can take to ensure her safety:

First, you might want to perform a patch test. Apply a small amount of the medication to a small area of her skin and wait for 24 hours to see if there is any reaction. This can help you determine if she might have a sensitivity to the product.

If you decide to proceed with the full dose, it's important to monitor her closely for at least 24 hours. Watch for any signs of an allergic reaction, such as excessive itching, redness, swelling, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.

Regarding the use of Benadryl (diphenhydramine), it can be used to manage mild allergic reactions in dogs. However, it's best to consult with a veterinarian for the correct dosage and to confirm that it’s appropriate for your dog. Generally, the dosage is 1 mg per pound of body weight, but professional advice is always safer.

If you’re very concerned about using Advantix, you might consider other flea and tick prevention methods, such as oral medications or natural remedies. Discussing these options with a veterinarian can provide you with the safest and most effective solution for your dog.

Given her medical history and your concerns, it would be a good idea to have a quick chat with your vet to get personalized advice. They can provide guidance tailored to her specific health needs and help you feel more confident in your decision.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
