There are several possible causes for your cat's symptoms. One potential cause could be a condition called "stud tail." Stud tail is more commonly seen in intact male cats and is characterized by the overproduction of oils in the tail area, leading to inflammation, pain, and matting of the fur. This condition can also attract flies, which may explain the presence of maggots in the litter box. Another possibility is that your cat may have a wound or injury on his tail, which has become infected and is causing discomfort.

However, before taking your cat to the hospital, there are a few things you can do at home to provide some relief and prevent further complications. Firstly, you can gently clean the affected area with warm water and a mild antiseptic solution, such as diluted chlorhexidine. This will help remove any debris or potential sources of infection. Avoid using any harsh chemicals or substances that may further irritate the skin.

If your cat allows it, you can also apply a warm compress to the affected area for about 10-15 minutes, a few times a day. This can help reduce inflammation and provide some relief.

Additionally, it is important to prevent your cat from excessively grooming or biting at his tail, as this can further worsen the condition. You can use an Elizabethan collar (cone) to prevent your cat from accessing his tail until you can seek veterinary advice.

In terms of additional symptomatic situations that would require immediate veterinary attention, you should monitor your cat closely for any signs of worsening or spreading of the symptoms. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, discharge, or if your cat becomes lethargic, loses appetite, or shows signs of pain, it is crucial to seek veterinary care promptly.
