It sounds like your Shih Tzu is going through some distressing symptoms, and I understand how concerning this must be for you. The behaviors you're observing, such as twitching, barking in pain, and growling, could be linked to a few different issues. These might include a neurological problem, like seizures, or pain stemming from an underlying condition such as arthritis or another type of injury. The fact that he seems to calm down when you pet him indicates that your presence is comforting, but it doesn't necessarily address the root cause of his discomfort.
Given the severity and sudden onset of these symptoms, it's really important to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. A thorough examination and possibly some diagnostic tests will help determine the cause of his pain and twitching. Addressing these symptoms promptly is crucial to ensure he receives the appropriate care and relief.
In the meantime, try to keep him in a calm and quiet environment to minimize stress. Avoid any activities that might worsen his symptoms, and keep a close eye on him for any changes or escalation in behavior.
Please seek veterinary care immediately to ensure your dog's health and well-being. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Thank you.
