Scabs around your reptile's mouth can indeed be concerning, and it's wise to consider both mouth rot and stuck shed as potential causes. Mouth rot, or infectious stomatitis, is a bacterial infection that may occur if your reptile's immune system is compromised or if there are injuries around the mouth. On the other hand, stuck shed can sometimes look similar but is generally less serious.
To address this issue, here are some steps you can take:
Firstly, examine the environment to ensure that the humidity and temperature in the enclosure are suitable for your reptile species. Improper conditions can lead to shedding issues and stress, which might contribute to infections.
Next, you might try gently cleaning the area with a saline solution to see if any of the scabs are simply loose skin. Be very gentle to avoid causing any injury.
It's also important to monitor your reptile for other symptoms. Watch for signs of lethargy, loss of appetite, or any discharge from the mouth, as these could indicate a more serious issue like mouth rot.
If the scabs persist or you notice any other concerning symptoms, it's best to consult a veterinarian who is experienced with reptiles. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment if necessary.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
