Two days ago my dogs ran out of their dog food and we stitched them to a sensitive skin and stomach diet. I did not know that they needed to be gradually switched over but don’t have the other food anymore. She isn’t having any insane symptoms. However, she is having VERY loud digestive sounds as well as some small amount of gas. She has not had any vomiting or diarrhea only some soft stool, which is not abnormal for her. I am concerned about the digestive noises, and if it is normal or not, a friend mentioned it could be pancreatitis, but I do not want to take her in if not needed, she is not bloated or showing any signs of pain or lethargy. Should I be concerned? Thank you.
Switching your dog's food abruptly can indeed lead to some digestive upset, such as loud digestive sounds and gas. However, if your dog is otherwise acting normally—eating, drinking, and not showing signs of pain or lethargy—these symptoms are generally not a major cause for concern. The digestive noises you’re hearing are likely due to the sudden change in diet, which can cause the digestive system to work harder to process the new food.
Pancreatitis is a more serious condition and typically presents with more severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Since your dog is not showing these signs, it is less likely that she has pancreatitis.
Firstly, keep a close eye on her condition. Monitor for any changes in behavior, appetite, or stool consistency.
Secondly, consider feeding her smaller, more frequent meals. This can help her digestive system adjust to the new food more gradually.
Additionally, ensure she has plenty of fresh water available to aid in digestion.
If her symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen, it would be wise to take her to a vet to rule out any other underlying issues.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
