Our neighbor had a cherry plum tree in her yard. The leaves get in our yard sometimes and I’m worried the fruit may too. I have never seen the fruit in our yard. But I read that if my dog eats the fruit it’s lethal? Like the pit can kill her. She has tried to eat the leaves before. They fly into our yard but idk if the fruit would too. Or if I should be worried. I can’t do much since it’s not our tree but they also have a dog.
It's completely understandable to be concerned about the potential risks associated with cherry plum trees, especially when you have a young puppy. These trees, like many stone fruits, have pits that can be harmful if ingested. The pits contain cyanogenic compounds, which can be toxic in large quantities. However, the fruit itself, as long as it doesn't include the pit, is generally not considered lethal.
For your puppy, the primary concern would be if she were to chew and swallow the pit. While the leaves are not as dangerous as the pits, they can still cause mild gastrointestinal upset if consumed in large amounts. Since you haven't noticed any fruit in your yard, the risk is relatively low, but it's always wise to be cautious.
To minimize any potential risk, you can take a few proactive steps:
Firstly, regularly inspect your yard for any fallen leaves or fruit and remove them promptly. Secondly, supervise your puppy when she's outside to ensure she doesn't eat anything she shouldn't. Lastly, it might be helpful to discuss the situation with your neighbor to see if they can assist in managing the tree's debris.
If you observe any signs of distress in your puppy, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, it would be prudent to consult a veterinarian. With vigilance, the risk should remain minimal. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. Thank you.
Now I’m worried she may have already eaten a pit. She doesn’t go over there often but idk. Would she have shown signs or could the pit just sit in her stomach? I’ve known a dog who passed from a cherry tree incident and him eating the cherries. Assuming that was for a blockage?
