She just had knee surgery 2 days ago and is on cephalexin twice a day. She vomited less than 10 minutes after taking her last dose and I just want to know if I should give her another or wait until the next dose in the morning. Can’t find any answers online about how quickly it’s absorbed
I understand your concern about your dog's reaction to her medication, especially following surgery. Vomiting shortly after taking cephalexin can indeed be worrying. Generally, cephalexin is absorbed fairly quickly, but if your dog vomited within 10 minutes of taking it, she might not have absorbed the full dose.
In this case, it's best not to administer another dose right away. Instead, wait until the next scheduled dose. Giving another dose too soon could risk an overdose or further upset her stomach.
To help manage her nausea, you might try giving her the medication with a small amount of food, as this can sometimes reduce stomach irritation. Additionally, ensure she stays hydrated and keep an eye on her for any other signs of distress or continued vomiting.
If she continues to vomit or exhibits any other concerning symptoms, I recommend contacting your veterinarian for further advice. They may need to adjust her medication or provide additional treatment to manage her symptoms effectively.
If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you.
