It’s 23 degrees and there’s snow on the ground. My dog kept holding a different paw up when we were out. He’s walking fine inside, is it the cold causing him to do this ?

It sounds like the cold and snow might be causing some discomfort for your dog, which is why he’s lifting his paws outside. Dogs can be quite sensitive to cold temperatures, and the snow or ice can be uncomfortable or even painful for their paws. Sometimes, ice can get stuck between their toes, which adds to their discomfort.

To help your dog cope with the cold weather, there are a few steps you can take. First, consider using dog booties. These can protect his paws from the cold and ice, and they also help prevent irritation from any salt or chemicals used on roads and sidewalks. Additionally, applying a paw balm or wax before heading outside can create a protective barrier against the cold and keep his paws moisturized.

After your walks, it’s a good idea to check his paws for any ice, snow, or debris that might be stuck between his toes and gently remove it. Also, try to limit the time he spends outside in very cold weather, especially if he seems uncomfortable.

Since he’s walking fine indoors, it’s likely just the cold affecting him. However, if you notice any limping, redness, or swelling in his paws, it would be wise to monitor the situation closely and consult a veterinarian if these issues persist.
