How would I know if my dog was losing muscle mass? He hasn’t lost any weight and was just at the vet. My dog’s musculoskeletal exam was normal and I assume my vet would’ve said something if she felt he was losing muscle. He still runs, jumps and plays. His legs look the same size. Should I be worried?

I'm glad to hear that your dog is active and that his recent veterinary check-up went well. It's reassuring to know that he's running, jumping, and playing without any issues, which suggests that his muscle condition is likely normal. However, muscle mass loss, or muscle atrophy, can sometimes be subtle and not always accompanied by weight loss.
If you're concerned about his muscle mass, there are a few things you can keep an eye on at home. Firstly, monitor his activity level. Pay attention to his energy levels and his ability to perform his usual activities. If you notice any signs of fatigue or reluctance to exercise, it might be worth noting.
Additionally, you can gently feel his muscles, especially around the legs and back. If you observe any significant changes in firmness or size over time, it would be a good idea to mention this to your vet during your next visit.
It's also important to ensure that he's receiving a balanced diet that supports muscle health. High-quality protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass. Lastly, continue to provide regular exercise to keep his muscles strong and healthy.
Since his recent check-up was normal and he isn't showing any signs of distress or difficulty, there doesn't seem to be an immediate cause for concern. However, if you do notice any changes in his behavior or physical condition, discussing them with your veterinarian would be wise.
If you have any further questions or need more information, please feel free to ask. Thank you!
