8 have a 5 month old kitten that received her second dose of dewormer 3 weeks ago. She has been eating, drinking has lots of energy. Today when she went to the bathroom she was scooting her bottom, I picked her up and looked and she had a live roundworm coming out. Is this normal because the dewormer is still getting rid of the worms? Or does she need to be treated again?

It's quite common for kittens to pass worms after receiving a dewormer, as this indicates that the medication is effectively working to eliminate the parasites from their system. While seeing a live roundworm can be unsettling, it's often a sign that the treatment is doing its job. However, to ensure the treatment is fully effective, there are a few steps you should consider.

Firstly, keep a close eye on your kitten's behavior and stool for any additional worms or changes. It's reassuring that she is eating, drinking, and remaining energetic.

Next, it's important to adhere to the deworming schedule. Sometimes, multiple doses are necessary to completely eradicate the worms, especially in cases of heavy infestation. Check the schedule provided by your veterinarian or the instructions on the medication packaging to determine if another dose is recommended.

Additionally, maintaining a clean environment is crucial. Regularly clean her litter box to prevent re-infestation, and wash any bedding or areas she frequents.

If you continue to notice worms or if your kitten shows any signs of discomfort or illness, it would be wise to consult with a veterinarian. They can assess whether another treatment is needed or if a different type of dewormer should be used.

Since your kitten seems to be doing well otherwise, continue to monitor her for now. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
