Aero has been moping today. I am pretty sure he may have gotten ahold of a small rat, about 2 weeks ago. he threw up a couple days ago and had diahrea for one day. I took him to emergency hospital about 2 hours ato. i did not get answers. they said his temp was 103°. he was given fluid behind neck & cerevia injection to prevent nausea. current symptoms remaining are still excessive drooling, heavier breathing while sleeping, and not wanting to pick head up. i was curious if this was normal post inj and fluid.

I understand why you're concerned about Aero's symptoms, given his recent history. The excessive drooling, heavier breathing, and lethargy you're noticing can be linked to various issues, such as potential toxic ingestion, infection, or other underlying health problems. Since Aero may have ingested a rat two weeks ago, this could be particularly relevant if the rat carried any toxins or diseases.

The Cerenia injection Aero received is intended to prevent nausea and vomiting, and the subcutaneous fluids are to help with dehydration. While these treatments are helpful, the symptoms you're observing aren't typical side effects and may suggest that Aero is still in distress.

A temperature of 103°F is slightly elevated for a dog, which might indicate an ongoing infection or inflammation. The combination of symptoms, especially the difficulty in breathing and lethargy, is concerning and should be investigated further.

I strongly recommend that you return to the veterinary hospital or seek a second opinion as soon as possible. It's important for Aero to have a thorough examination and possibly additional tests to determine the underlying cause of these symptoms. Quick intervention can be crucial in addressing any serious health issues.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.

Is it not normal for my dog to be tired following the injection and sub q fluids given to him 2.5 hours ago? what do i need to watch him on?

Mild tiredness after a Cerenia injection and subcutaneous fluids is normal, but extreme lethargy, persistent heavy breathing, or difficulty lifting his head is not. Cerenia can cause drowsiness in some dogs, but it shouldn’t make him excessively weak or unresponsive. The fluids can also make him feel temporarily sluggish as his body absorbs them.

Watch for worsening symptoms like extreme weakness, uncontrolled drooling, pale or bluish gums, increased respiratory effort, or unsteadiness. If he becomes more lethargic, refuses water, or shows neurological signs like tremors or disorientation, he needs immediate attention. Otherwise, let him rest in a calm environment, offer small amounts of water, and monitor his breathing. If his condition doesn’t improve within a few hours or worsens overnight, further evaluation is needed.

Please understand that it is difficult to know his exact condition without testing. The best thing to do is to contact the hospital that treated him or take him there to check his condition.
