He went for a walk and he got stuck on a branch and he’s thumbnail open in half, we put washed it with soap we got before form the vet and I put Polysporin on it and wrapped it around with tape and bandages, it’s been 2 days and I thought it was getting better but when I changed his bandages just now he’s paw started to shake and he is licking a lot, do we need to go to the vet??

It sounds like your dog's nail injury is causing him some discomfort, which is understandable, as a split or broken nail can be quite painful and may lead to infection if not properly cared for. The shaking of the paw and excessive licking are often signs of pain or irritation.

Since you've already taken the important step of cleaning the wound and applying an antibiotic ointment, there are a few more things you can do at home to help your dog:

Firstly, continue to keep the area clean. Use the soap provided by your vet to gently clean the wound, ensuring it's thoroughly rinsed and dried before applying any ointment. Polysporin is a good choice for minor cuts and scrapes, so apply a thin layer after cleaning the wound.

When it comes to bandaging, make sure the bandage isn't too tight, as this could restrict blood flow. Use a breathable material and change the bandage daily to keep the area clean and dry.

It's also important to prevent your dog from licking the wound, as this can introduce bacteria and delay healing. You might consider using an Elizabethan collar, or cone, to prevent him from reaching the paw.

Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge. If you notice any of these signs, or if the paw continues to shake and your dog seems to be in pain, it would be wise to consult a veterinarian.

If the symptoms persist or worsen, it's best to have a vet examine the injury to ensure there's no underlying issue that needs attention. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
