I cut Miley’s nail too short and hit the quick. I used cornstarch to stop it but I don’t know how long I should leave it on. I covered it with a sock as well.
Accidentally cutting a dog's nail too short and hitting the quick can indeed be a bit alarming, but it sounds like you’ve taken some excellent initial steps. Using cornstarch to help stop the bleeding is a great choice, and covering the nail with a sock can help keep it clean and prevent further injury.
You can leave the cornstarch on until the bleeding has completely stopped, which usually takes a few minutes. It's important to keep an eye on it during this time. Once the bleeding has ceased, you can gently clean the area with a damp cloth to remove any excess cornstarch.
It's a good idea to keep the sock on for a few hours to protect the nail, but make sure to check it periodically to ensure it’s not too tight and that your dog is comfortable. If the bleeding starts again, you can reapply the cornstarch or use a styptic powder if you have it available.
Monitor your dog for any signs of infection, such as swelling, redness, or discharge from the nail. If you notice any of these signs or if the bleeding doesn’t stop, it would be wise to consult with a veterinarian.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
