Separation anxiety

Every time I leave out for the doggy that we have up Ollie will sit at the gate and start barking and you won’t stop until someone comes into the area picks him up and gives him a hug

Separation anxiety is quite common in dogs, especially in breeds like dachshunds that form strong attachments to their owners. Ollie's behavior of barking and seeking attention when you leave is a classic sign of this condition.

First, consider **gradual desensitization**. Start by leaving Ollie alone for short periods and gradually increase the duration. This helps him get used to being alone without feeling abandoned.

Next, **create a safe space** for Ollie. Ensure he has a comfortable and secure area where he feels safe, such as a specific room or a crate with his favorite toys and bedding.

Providing **interactive toys** can also be beneficial. Toys that keep him occupied, like puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys, can distract him and reduce anxiety.

It's also important to ensure Ollie gets plenty of **exercise**. A tired dog is less likely to be anxious, so long walks, playtime, and training sessions can help.

When it comes to your comings and goings, practice **calm departures and arrivals**.

If these strategies don't seem to help and Ollie's anxiety persists, it might be beneficial to consult with a professional dog trainer or a veterinary behaviorist. They can provide more tailored advice and, if necessary, discuss other options like anxiety-reducing medications.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
