My dog has been licking or chewing the middle of his tail for about a month. Yesterday I noticed some dandruff around his back which is normal this time of year due to the cold and maybe the heat drying him out. I never noticed the tail licking/ chewing in the past. I washed his tail yesterday and there are no wounds or lumps. The skin isn’t irritated either. Could he be licking because he’s itchy? Could the cold and the heat being on be drying his skin out?

It sounds like your dog's dry skin could indeed be a result of the cold weather and indoor heating, which can lead to dandruff and itchiness. This discomfort might be causing your dog to lick or chew his tail. Here are a few suggestions you can try at home to help alleviate the situation:
Firstly, consider moisturizing your dog's skin by using a pet-safe moisturizing shampoo or conditioner during baths. There are also leave-in conditioners or sprays specifically designed for dogs that can help retain moisture in their skin.
Additionally, using a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air, potentially reducing the drying effects of indoor heating.
Incorporating dietary supplements, such as Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, can also be beneficial for your dog's skin health. These supplements help maintain a healthy coat and reduce inflammation. Just be sure to choose a supplement formulated for dogs and follow the recommended dosage.
Regular grooming is another helpful practice. Brushing your dog regularly can distribute natural oils throughout their coat, improving skin health and reducing dandruff.
Lastly, it's important to monitor your dog for any changes. Keep an eye out for redness, swelling, or any changes in behavior that might indicate an underlying issue.
If the dandruff persists or you notice increased licking or chewing, it might be wise to consult a veterinarian to rule out other potential causes like allergies or parasites. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.
