Tootsie is a pit/lab mix, is 12 years old and weighs about 70 lbs. She is allergic to chicken and grain and has had joint dysplasia.
I recently started to give her glucosamine and chondroitin. She's been jumping around more and is acting like she used to, but she's constantly licking herself and drinking a lot of water

I'm glad to hear that Tootsie is feeling more energetic and active with the glucosamine and chondroitin supplements. However, it's important to pay attention to her constant licking and increased water intake, as these behaviors could indicate underlying issues.

The excessive licking might be due to skin irritation or allergies, particularly since Tootsie has known allergies to chicken and grain. It's crucial to check that the supplements or any new treats or foods do not contain these allergens. Additionally, her increased activity could be causing some discomfort or irritation in her joints or skin, which might lead to licking.

Regarding her increased water intake, this could sometimes be a side effect of certain supplements or medications. However, it might also suggest other underlying issues such as diabetes, kidney problems, or hormonal imbalances, especially in older dogs.

Here are a few steps you can take at home:

- First, check the ingredients in the glucosamine and chondroitin supplements to ensure they don't contain any allergens.
- Monitor her skin for any signs of redness, rash, or irritation that might be causing the licking.
- Make sure she has access to fresh, clean water at all times, but keep an eye on the amount she's drinking.
- Consider any other changes in her diet or environment that might be contributing to these behaviors.

If these behaviors persist or if you notice any additional symptoms such as changes in appetite, weight loss, or lethargy, it would be wise to consult with a veterinarian. They can help rule out any underlying health issues and may want to perform some tests to ensure everything is functioning well internally.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions. Thank you.
