One possible cause of your dog's coughing could be an upper respiratory infection. These infections are commonly caused by viruses or bacteria and can result in symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and lethargy. If your dog is otherwise healthy and eating well, you can try providing a warm and quiet environment at home to help her recover. Ensure she has access to fresh water and monitor her closely for any changes in appetite or behavior.

Another potential cause of coughing in dogs is tracheal irritation or collapse. This occurs when the trachea, or windpipe, becomes inflamed or weakened, leading to coughing episodes. Small breed dogs, like miniature schnauzers, are more prone to this condition. To alleviate symptoms at home, you can try using a harness instead of a collar when walking your dog, as collars can put pressure on the trachea and exacerbate the cough. Additionally, avoiding exposure to irritants such as smoke or strong odors may help.

Heartworm disease is another potential cause of coughing in dogs. This disease is transmitted through mosquito bites and can lead to heart and lung damage, resulting in coughing, difficulty breathing, and exercise intolerance.

Lastly, it is important to consider the possibility of a foreign body or an underlying congenital condition causing your dog's coughing. Dogs are curious animals and may ingest objects that can become lodged in their airways, leading to coughing. Additionally, certain congenital conditions, such as a collapsing trachea or a heart defect, can cause persistent coughing.
